Delhi Health Minister Assures Public Amidst Rise in JN.1 COVID-19 Sub-Variant Cases

Amidst growing concerns over the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj addressed the public on Wednesday, reassuring them that while the variant is infectious, it is considered “mild.” He emphasized that the Delhi government is fully alert and actively preparing to tackle the situation.

Proactive Measures of Delhi Government to Control COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 Cases

As part of the proactive measures, Bharadwaj revealed that the Delhi government is intensifying genome surveillance in response to the recent uptick in COVID-19 cases across the country. Oxygen cylinders, ventilator beds, and other essential resources are under careful review to ensure the city’s healthcare infrastructure is well-equipped.

Describing the JN.1 sub-variant, Bharadwaj stated, “It’s a variant of Omicron. It is mild. It is infectious but not very serious in nature.” He highlighted that the government is reevaluating the requirements for oxygen cylinders, ventilator beds, and isolation wards, emphasizing their commitment to preparedness.

Regarding the reported deaths, Bharadwaj clarified that they were primarily among patients with co-morbidities. He added, “Nearly 90 per cent of patients are getting cured through home isolation. Very few are requiring oxygen or ventilator.” Despite the relatively mild nature of the variant, the Health Minister urged citizens not to panic but to remain cautious to curb the spread of the infection.

National Overview: NITI Aayog Member and Health Ministry Data

NITI Aayog Member (Health) Dr. VK Paul supported this perspective, stating that there have been 21 confirmed cases of the JN.1 sub-variant across the country. However, he emphasized that there is no need for panic. The Union Health Ministry’s data on Wednesday reported 614 new COVID-19 cases, the highest since May 21, with an active caseload of 2,311.

Delhi currently has four active cases, three more than the previous day, according to the data. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, in response to the rising cases, reviewed the preparedness of health facilities nationwide and urged vigilance against emerging strains.

WHO Classification: Low Global Public Health Risk of COVID-19

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified JN.1 as a separate “variant of interest.” While acknowledging its rapidly increasing spread, the WHO has assessed the global public health risk as “low.” The variant was initially categorized as part of the BA.2.86 sub-lineages, but its prevalence has risen globally in recent weeks.

The Delhi government remains fully prepared to address any health exigency, with ongoing mock drills and reviews. The reassurances from health officials aim to instil confidence in the public while emphasizing the importance of remaining vigilant against the evolving situation.
